Nineteen degrees north of the equator you'll find a small workshop where artisan-owners source local leathers and repurpose tires to craft beautiful handmade sandals and accessories. Inspired by its French translation, craftsman use their own two hand to sculpt sidewalls into soles with a pride that comes from not only making something valuable for others, but also making a meaningful life for themselves.
Deux Mains Designs is an employee-owned and operated ethical fashion company in Haiti. Born in the disaster of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, they survived in her wake by learning the art of shoemaking, determined to rebuild their lives. With the help of nonprofit partner, REBUILD globally, Deux Mains is part of a social business ecosystem committed to building financial security for the most vulnerable in Haiti; while also committed to creating a modern fashion brand that is always authentic, slightly eccentric and proudly unique.
About the Product:
Haitian artisans hand craft each pair of Deux Mains sandals, tote bag and accessories using up-cycled tires and genuine, locally sourced leather in a range of custom colors.
In Port-au-Prince, old tires and rubber litter streets and clog drainage systems, increasing the risk of flooding to people's homes. They are also regularly burned, releasing dangerous toxins into the air. Other tires end up in the ocean. The craftspeople of Haiti put those tires to better use by crafting them into everyday wear. Over the past 6 years, they have up-cycled more the 9,000 tires into sustainable fashion footwear. Each pair of sandals crafted prevents approximately 10kg of CO2 from being emitted into Earth's atmosphere. Expanding their collection, the team has introduced handbags, totes and accessories made from the same materials.
